Replacement Housing Barn B

DESCRIPTION

  • Growing heifer barn for calves post-weaning through 10 months of age for a 75-cow dairy herd.
  • Naturally ventilated barn with a supplemental positive pressure tube ventilation system to provide the minimum winter ventilation rate of 4 air changes per hour when curtains are closed during the winter.
  • Appropriately sized ridge cap over the ridge opening decreases rain falling into the barn while still allowing for natural ventilation.
  • East-west orientation with no wind shadow obstructions and 14′ (4.3 m) sidewalls with a short, 2′ (61 cm) concrete knee wall to take advantage of prevailing winds for natural ventilation.
  • The bedded pack is separated from the feed alley with a 6″ (15 cm) curb to keep the bedding from being dragged into the feed alley and wasted, and makes cleaning easier.
  • The bedded pack depth is less than ~35′ (10.7 m).
  • Gravel base under the bedded pack area to allow for better drainage and less straw usage.
  • The waterers are bumped into the bedded pack with a surrounding wall so that the calves have access to the waterers only from the feed alley while making a clear path for scraping the feed alley.
